Why We Donate Seeds

Sharing seeds with communities aligns with our mission of empowering people to design, manage, and continue to enjoy tending to the land and the people in their care. We are building a tool for gardeners, backyard and balcony growers, and land stewards out there. Specifically, we believe Permiehub, as a tool, helps with finding the right spot for your seeds and recording their location.

Get Involved

A seed library is a community-based initiative where people can access seeds to grow plants in their gardens. Similar to a traditional libraries, gardeners borrow seeds, grow them, and then return a portion of the harvested seeds to replenish the library’s stock. This system promotes seed saving, biodiversity, and access to a variety of plant species for local gardeners.

To contribute to the food security of your local community, you can join the movement by following these steps:

Borrow Seeds: Start by borrowing seeds from your local seed library.
Plant Seeds: Plant the seeds in your garden, ensuring proper spacing between different varieties to prevent cross-pollination.
Record Your Planting: If you use Permiehub, record your planting by noting it down on a virtual garden bed or creating a digital representation of the plant. Previously drawing your garden in Permiehub and marking your planting in your drawing can help you remember without having to rely on garden labels.
Harvest Your Seeds: Once your plants mature, carefully harvest a portion of the seeds.
Share Your Seeds: Attend a seed packing day organized by your local seed library group to help prepare the seeds for future distribution. Alternatively, donate your harvested seeds in a designated container at a drop-off point.

Starting a Seed Library

If there isn’t a seed library near you, you can take the initiative and start one! Explore potential locations such as your local community garden, street library, city library, or even a designated space within a community center. Engage with your community to find the most suitable and accessible spot.

Ensure proper seed storage: Choose a location that provides adequate protection. This means a space that is sheltered from the weather, secure from pests like rodents and insects, and organized with clear containers and labeling systems.
Gather community support: Spread the word about your plans through local newsletters, social media, and community events. Recruit volunteers to assist with managing the seed library, organizing seed packing events, and providing gardening advice.

Contact us, and we may be able to provide a small seed donation to help you get started. Begin with a modest selection of seeds and gradually expand your collection based on community interest and availability. Continuously learn from your experiences and adapt your approach based on community feedback and the evolving needs of your seed library.
