Using Grids

Starting with Permiehub  Mapping Base Map  Zoning Concept Design  Detailing Design  Accelerating Work

See how to use reference grids as a guide to oriend related objects in the same direction and how they help with conveying dimension.

When we print our designs on paper, we often find that the fixed scale is lost if the document is later enlarged or shrunk to fit a different page size. Grids solve this problem by providing a permanent, visual reference that stays relative to the design itself.

When interpreting the design, instead of relying on a ruler to calculate measurements based on a ratio, we can simply count the grid squares to determine the real-world size of an area. It makes our design instantly readable for anyone on-site, whether they are using an A4 printout or a large-scale poster.

In the design process, grids also help us maintain a consistent rhythm and modularity, ensuring that garden elements like paths and garden beds are sized to match standard building materials or comfortable walking widths.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up Grid in Permiehub

  1. Open your project.
  2. Click on the Reference Grid tool in the toolbox.
  3. Draw the direction of your grid. For example, align it with major structures that affect the underlying flow of your design. Optionally, adjust the direction using draggable points or resize using the shape editing tool. You can also move or rotate the grid area.
  4. Use the grid as a guide while drawing. Where possible, you can draw objects using the angled rectangle tool.
  5. When printing using the Download to Print tool, you can choose to disable the fixed scale and display grid spacing instead.
